One of our writers recently shared a recipe of her favorite vegan chocolate chip cookies. After reading the article, I decided to don an apron, oven mitt, and quite a bit of flour so that I may try making these cookies myself. This is my review of the recipe.
Making the dough was perhaps the easiest—and most delicious—part. I found all of the ingredients at Whole Foods, and for the most part, they were quite inexpensive. It took about ten minutes to get all of the ingredients mixed in the bowl. The smell was tantalizing, so I ended up eating about a third of the cookie dough—oops. Because this recipe is vegan, there were no raw ingredients, so, luckily for me, eating the dough was perfectly healthy. I found the consistency of the dough to be more of a batter than a dough but once I started molding the cookie balls, I realized the gooiness wasn’t a problem
Now, putting them in the oven is where I had difficulty. Under full disclosure, I’m not a baker. I rarely bake, and when I do, things tend to not end up so well. This is likely why I met a few problems at this step.
I found that I had rolled my cookie balls too large. Because of this, they all expanded into one another and were uneven. While some of the spots were quite tasty, I ended up throwing this batch out because of the charred spots.
While the first batch didn’t end up so well, the second was heavenly. I made a smaller cookie ball and set it in the oven by itself. Having turned out perfect, I put a full batch in with this size. The size of these cookie balls were approximately an inch in diameter. While they seemed small at first, they expanded and ended up being typical-sized cookies. This cookie dough does expand quite a bit, so plan for size and space given accordingly.
Like the cookie dough, the baked cookies tasted delicious. They were soft, chewy, and sweet—everything you’d want in a cookie! In addition, I didn’t feel completely unhealthy making these and eating these. No ingredients were unhealthy and no sugar was added! How exciting.
Overall, I would rate these cookies a 9/10. They only lost a point because of my own baking inexperience. However, after a little trial and error, I ended up with some delicious and amazing cookies. I have quite a few of the ingredients left over, so I’m thinking I’ll be making these cookies again very soon.
