A woman hero in a western is almost as rare as a current western. Directed by Gavin O’Connor, Jane Got a Gun, attempts to do just that: create a prevailing western about female empowerment. The film uses its potential to develop a mediocre story, a love triangle midst an outlaw attack in the post-Civil War territory of New Mexico. There is little romanticism depicting the west and the outlaws are typical villains. The story itself illustrates glimpses of Jane’s tale and her perseverance, but the audience will be more captivated by the other characters. Jane Got a Gun is co-written and produced by the leads, Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton, and also stars Ewan McGregor and Noah Emmerich. The cast works well together, portraying the appropriate pieces to complete a generic western puzzle.
As noted, this movie’s concept did have the competency to represent a revamped tale of frontier endurance. However, the suspense is predictable and there is lack of believability regarding Jane’s character development. Nonetheless, the landscape scenes are riveting with the use of natural light. Jane Got a Gun is a film one can enjoy cuddled up on the couch during a cloudy, rainy day, seeing as the sun won’t be the only thing not shining. If anything, western fans may be comforted with the genre’s familiarity, like a stale piece of cake from a party.
