The Falcons were hoping to take sole possession of first place in the Big 8 Conference with a win over Santa Rosa yesterday, but instead the BearCubs emerged the victors as they edged the home team, 5-3. The match was a showdown between the top two teams in the Big 8 and lived up to the hype as the difference between the teams was the slightest of margins. The Falcons’ #1 doubles team ofHannah Crookham and Sophie Taber lost their first match of the season (8-6) in dramatic fashion, having their serve broken in the final game of the set after making a comeback of their own. Had that match gone the other way – as it was so close to doing – the Falcons would have earned the team victory. Arielle and Anjelica Frank continued their winning partnership in doubles, 8-4 and Sophie Taberwon a close three-set match at #2 singles after dropping the first set.
Crookham/Taber lost 6-8 Hannah Crookham lost 2-6, 0-6
Frank/Frank won 8-4 Sophie Taber won 7-5, 4-6, 6-2
Lewis/Tacuyan lost 4-8 Anjelica Frank halted by rain 6-7, 5-2
Arielle Frank won 6-4, 6-0
Emma Lewis lost 4-6, 0-6
Alexandra Tacuyan lost 0-6, 2-6
The loss was the Falcons’ first of the season and leaves them with an 8-1 overall record (4-1 in the Big 8).
The FLC men shut out Santa Rosa on Tuesday afternoon, 9-0, to move into third place in the Big 8 Conference. Number 1 singles playerSean Alves returned to action after resting a sore wrist for the past week and showed no rust as he won easily 6-0, 6-0. The Falcons improved their overall season record to 7-3 (4-3 in the Big 8 ) with the victory.

The Falcons took on College of Marin on Tuesday afternoon in Kentfield, but came home with neither a win nor a loss as the game was halted after 15 innings with the score tied 4-4. The two teams will resume play today (at Falcon Field) at 2:00 pm, prior to their scheduled make-up game of last Saturday’s rainout. El Niño strikes again!
The FLC softball team wrapped up their non-conference schedule yesterday in Stockton as they lost to host Delta College, 10-3. The Falcons fell behind 4-0 as the Mustangs posted single runs in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th innings. But in the sixth, the Falcons got a 2-run homer from Bree Martinez – her 3rd home run of the season – and an RBI single by Anna Ydiarte to close to within one at 4-3. After that, though, it was all Mustangs as they pushed across six runs in the sixth to put the game away.
The Falcons are scheduled to open BVC play at Napa Valley tomorrow, however that game has already been postponed due to wet field conditions and a wetter forecast. At this time, it appears the Falcons’ next game will be at Falcon Diamond against Mendocino on Tuesday, March 15. Stay tuned….
