“Hey you. I love you. Come sit by me,” said one club member to another. Throughout the entire club meeting, I had the privilege of experiencing the inviting and loving spirit that lives in each and every one of QSA’s members.
From the moment I entered the room, I was welcomed by warm people with exciting personalities and thrilling conversation. Before the meeting officially began, all sorts of conversations were bouncing around the room. A handful of members discussed the new team member being added to the show “Powerpuff Girls,” while a couple others joked about sex toys (glow-in-the-dark dildos!), and a few other members explored the topic of oppression of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States.
Then the meeting began. Each person introduced themselves and then answered the Question of the Day: What is one thing that you love about yourself? Many of the answers revolved around resilience and perseverance, while others were happy at how quickly they can devour a Little Caesar’s pizza.
Afterwards, they discussed the topic of all-gender bathrooms on campus. While there are two on campus, they are tucked away and hidden and aren’t easily accessible. While there aren’t any set plans in place yet, their hope is to eventually have more all-gender bathrooms that are easily accessible to students.
Another topic that was discussed was how students can make their preferred name show up on Professors’ rosters. By doing so, their preferred name will show up in red text in parentheses next to their primary name. Here are the steps below:
1. Log into your eServices account.
2. Scroll down to “Personal Information” and click on “Names.”
3. Click on the “edit” button to the right of your current Preferred Name.
4. Adjust the settings to create your preferred name. Click “Save.”
You can catch these amazing human beings at Club Day on Folsom Lake College’s main campus, on Wednesday, September 13 from 12pm-1pm. They’ll be outside the Falcon’s Roost, where you can meet with them, ask questions, bounce ideas around, and even join the club. The club meets every Thursday 12pm-1pm in room FL2-153, and every third Thursday from 11am-2pm in the Peregrine Room. Feel free to stop by and they’ll make you feel as welcome as they did for me. These people are crazy and weird and incredibly beautiful. I, myself, will definitely attend more meetings throughout this semester.
