Over the past few years, a new form of funding has become available to aspiring entrepreneurs and artists; Crowdfunding. This form of fan supported products has led to many success stories, and the creation of products that would have otherwise never come to fruition. Of course, this format has not been without its controversies, but overall it has proven to have a positive impact. The most popular platform for crowdfunding today is undoubtedly the website Kickstarter.
Originally founded in 2009, Kickstarter has become the premier platform for those wishing to gain crowdfunding for their projects. Over the last 5 years the company has received over $1.5 billion in donations, with over 7 million backers funding projects. These projects have included food, film, art, and video games. With the help of backers, developers, artist, and entrepreneurs have been able to bring their projects to life. Some of the more prominent successes include the Pebble Time Smartwatch project, a high tech watch that has become one of the most funded projects on Kickstarter, the retro-style video game Shovel Knight, and the Oculus Rift virtual reality device.
While there have been issues with Kickstarter, the website has still had even more successes. If you’re interested in looking for a project that peaks your interest, the site can be found here. Just remember that while you may believe in a project, there are no guarantees to its success.
