At a press junket in London Knocked Up and This is 40 director Judd Apatow mentioned he may make another spin off. The idea may be to follow the characters Sadie and Charlotte as they get older. Sadie and Charlotte are the daughters of Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd's characters. But more importantly the young actresses are the real life daughters of Mann and Apatow.
The interview can be seen here where Apatow mentions the future film may follow the girls when they are college aged. Hopefully Apatow can make the girls more interesting characters than they were in This is 40 where I found them quite annoying.
What truly sticks out in the scant 43 second clip is Apatow saying, "maybe I'm lazy and it's a fun way to get home movies." Not exactly a glowing endorsement of yourself especially when I view him already as a slightly lazy director.
The movies Apatow has ended up directing (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People, and This is 40) all have a similar style. While that is to be expected of a director, they seem too close to the same movie for me. The way he handles all of his subject matter seems as if Apatow is only capable of making one kind of movie.
But you can't really blame Apatow. His movies have made over 350 million dollars. His films get mostly positive reviews, all but his latest. So I'm in the minority wishing to see something more from him. But going back to the same raunchy well doesn't excite me. Maybe for some people the news will be exciting. But personally, I would like to see him try something new. Then again, how can you argue with $350 million?
