Men’s soccer loses at Modesto, 5-2
Women’s soccer holds off Sierra, 2-1
The FLC men’s soccer team had hoped to get back on the winning track with a match against an opponent they’d already beaten earlier this season, but instead fell to a motivated Modesto squad on Tuesday afternoon in Modesto, 5-2. The Pirates scored early and often against the Falcons on their way to 5-1 halftime lead. Freshmen Miguel Medina and Jose Muñoz accounted for the Falcons’ scoring with their 6th and 4th goals of the season, respectively. The loss was the Falcons’ seventh in a row and drops their Big 8 Conference record to 3-6. They will hope to finish the season on a high note on Friday afternoon when they host Delta College (0-5-4 in Big 8) at 4:30 pm in Falcon Stadium.
Playing in front of one of the largest crowds of the season at Falcon Stadium on Sophomore Recognition Night, the FLC women’s soccer team exacted some revenge on a Sierra College team that had previously defeated the Falcons a month ago in Rocklin (1-0) with an exciting 2-1 victory on Tuesday night. The Falcons built a 2-0 first-half lead behind freshman Breanna Brumet’s two goals before allowing Sierra to score a controversial goal just before time expired in the first half. Brumet’s first goal came in just the 3rd minute of play after sophomore Hannah O’Donnell dribbled around a defender on the right wing, then crossed to the waiting Brumet for the goal. With a 2-1 halftime lead, the Falcon defense shut down the Wolverines over the final 45 minutes to earn the win. The match was the final regular-season home game for the 10 Falcon sophomores, each of whom received a bouquet and a brief recap of their career at FLC in front of the home crowd.
With the victory, the Falcons improved to 9-3-3 in Big 8 Conference play and 14-3-3 overall. They will conclude their regular season at Sacramento City College on Thursday night at 6:00 pm. The CCCAA state playoffs are scheduled to begin on Saturday, November 19 with the Falcons expecting to host a first-round match.
