Tennis teams impress at Big 8 Tournament
Baseball team back on winning track
NorCal playoff pairings for tennis announced; both FLC teams earn berths
The FLC men’s and women’s tennis teams made a lasting impression over the weekend at the Big 8 Conference Tournament in Santa Rosa. As the tournament proceeded through the rounds, the Falcons were seemingly represented everywhere. The women had three singles players advance to the quarterfinals (Hannah Crookham, Sophie Taber, and Anjelica Frank) and two doubles teams qualify for the semifinals (Crookham/Taber andArielle/Anjelica Frank). Crookham lost in the semifinals in singles, but she and Taber played all the way to the finals in doubles before losing a heartbreaking third-set tie-breaker. On the men’s side, Sean Alvesadvanced to the semifinals in singles, and Max Hennessey and Shawn Morgan made it to the Consolation Finals against each other, with Morgan winning. Alves and doubles partner Kevin Conley reached the quarterfinals before elimination, and Morgan/Hennessey played through the back draw to reach the consolation semifinals.
After the smoke had cleared, the Falcons determined that they will havenine tennis players representing FLC at the State Championship tournament in Ojai in late April. For the men, Sean Alves and Shawn Morgan will compete in singles, and Alves and Conley qualified in doubles. On the women’s side, the Falcons will be represented in singles by Hannah Crookham, Sophie Taber, and Anjelica Frank. FLC will be well represented in doubles as all three Falcons pairs qualified: Crookham/Taber, Frank/Frank, and Michelle Doyle/Reener Balingit.
The Falcons shook off a two-game losing streak on Saturday when they defeated Napa Valley in 12 innings, 2-1. Falcon starting pitcher Josh Moorewas brilliant, allowing just one run on six hits over eight innings. Napa’s Troy Nixon was equally as impressive, giving up one unearned run in his seven innings. With neither team able to add to their score, the game went into extra innings tied at one. But in the 12th, FLC’s Ty Maria led off with a double. With Vincent DeBove pinch-running for Maria, Austin Wailesbunted him over to third. Greg Vaughn then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring DeBove with what turned out to be the winning run. Reliever Jason Wullenwaber picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
The Falcons improved their BVC record to 10-5 (15-12 overall), two games behind leader Laney and just one back of second-place Los Medanos.
