It’s 1980 and the end of a Texas summer is near. Before the semester begins, a fictional college baseball team spends the August weekend with minimal adult supervision, bonding over girls and booze.
Richard Linklater’s personal sequel to Dazed and Confused illustrates the journey of life during these young men’s glory days. Everybody Wants Some!! stars an ensemble of new actors who bring a fresh and raw energy to the screen. Blake Jenner, most notable for his role on Glee, portrays the rookie pitcher as he adjusts from high school to college life. The film also stars Ryan Guzman, Juston Street, and Glen Powell as fellow teammates; Zoey Deutch portrays the main love interest. The camaraderie between the actors is undeniable and the character development doesn’t lack as much as the baseball scenes. Throughout the entire film, only one baseball scene unfolds, but this twenty-ish minute scrimmage is a golden example of how fun the movie truly is. The dynamic of this film represents the underlying struggle of masculinity and displays it in a more positive light because the audience is able to understand the boys’ reasoning. As a slight warning, this movie is rated R for language, nudity, drug use, and, of course, rock ‘n roll. Everybody Wants Some!! is authentic, whimsical, and sincere.
