Consumnes River College Event
by Nicole Washington
On March 4th, 2014, there was a screening of Brave Miss World at the Cosumnes River Campus of the Los Rios district. This screening was open to only Cosumnes River Campus students, but the faculty was willing to allow myself and a fellow Talon journalist to watch the screening. It is important for college campuses to express interest in such a prevalent issue because it is something that happens more often than most people would like to think. Below is a quick synopsis of what Brave Miss World is about, but it is highly recommended that you view this documentary on Netflix. I also recommend that students at other campuses, especially campuses within the Los Rios district, attempt to get this documentary screened at their campuses as well.
Brave Miss World
by Viki Papadakis
Brave Miss World is a must-watch documentary that focuses on the very real issue of rape in our society. The documentary first discusses the story of Miss World 1998, Linor Abargil, who originated from Israel. Mere weeks before winning her title as Miss World, Abargil was brutally raped. Because of her title, Abargil’s experiences were in the spotlight and possibly aided in the process of getting the person who raped her prosecuted and convicted. Since the attack, Abargil has used the platform of her title to reach out to other rape victims--specifically by creating a website for rape victims. Since the website’s launch, people from all over the world have contacted Abargil and shared their experiences and emotions regarding the pressing issue of rape.
The documentary continues to discuss the prevalence of rape among women throughout the world. Throughout the documentary, many women share their own personal experiences with rape, the coping and healing processes, and the prosecution (or lack thereof) of the individuals who assaulted them. The documentary then specifically discusses rape on college campuses. This has become a very pressing issue, as rape has become very apparent on college campuses. In the documentary, a few women share their experiences with sexual assault, and discuss how difficult the prosecution process can be in a college setting.
Not only is this documentary very informative, it also provides many resources for victims of rape and sexual assault. This documentary contains many important resources and information regarding the very prevalent issue of sexual assault, making it an interesting watch for all individuals living in today’s society. Brave Miss World will be available on Netflix in the near future.
