Randy Edelman – The Underrated Film Composer and Singer/Songwriter

If you were to ask someone who their favorite film composer is, there are generally only a handful of names you’ll hear. John Williams, Hanz Zimmer, and Danny Elfman will probably pop up. For me, it’s Randy Edelman. Who’s that you may ask? Randy is a film score composer who started his career doing solo vocal albums. He is an expert piano player and has written some of the most beautiful and catchy songs I have ever heard. He has done the soundtracks to dozens of films, including Dragonheart (1996), Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Kindergarten Cop (1990), and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (1998). Edelman even did the soundtrack...

Pizza With the President

To conclude this year’s series of open forums at Folsom Lake College, student government’s final assembly, “Pizza With the President”, was perhaps the most interactive and successful of the meetings. This open forum doubled as a typical open forum meeting and an oath of office for the incoming officers of the student senate. Both the incoming senate president, Jonathan Rogers and the incoming senate treasurer, Sami Manos participated in this concise but powerful process. Rogers and Manos took this oath as a “firm commitment to fulfill [the] obligations” that their student government positions entail. Having had a chance to converse with Rogers, I was able to recognize his dedication and...

The Great Gatsby - Movie Review

Picture
Underneath all the glitz and glamour of Baz Luhrmann's Gatsby adaptation is a terrible film. The Great Gatsby is big and vibrant, but all that is surface and meaningless. So many aspects of this film do not work, and it all begins with Luhrmann. The combination of Luhrmann and a roaring twenties, period piece seem like a perfect fit. The time period was what Luhrmann was most fascinated with causing the neglect of what should have been key elements: characters and story. But it's the parties that he cares about and focuses on. While the parties look great, at least...

How to Get Over Writer’s Block

  1. Sit down at your laptop and smile. I should have this article done by tonight, you think to yourself. Tonight at the LATEST. More like this afternoon. Maybe even an hour from now. Probably in ten minutes. Or even in five minutes and everyone is going to be impressed that my article was done so quickly (pause here for an evil laugh) but I’ll just brush it off and say well, you know, I was always a natural-born writer, no really, this takes absolutely no effort at all, is that a Pulitzer Prize? Oh you shouldn’t have….
  2. Open a blank Word document.
  3. Stare at the blank Word document.

No Excitement for the Summer Blockbuster

Picture
With the release of Oblivion a few weeks ago the movie industry is moving into the summer season. If we weren't there with the latest Tom Cruise vehicle, we are certainly there now with the release of the latest installment in the Iron Man franchise. While it isn't actually summer yet, the summer movie season has been stretched earlier that the more appropriate title should be the blockbuster season. Every summer is dominated by blockbusters that cost upwards of $100 million and are usually reboots, sequels, or...

The Disconnect of Chris Broussard

Calling Jason Collins a sinner shouldn't have been the only thing ESPN reporter Chris Broussard got into hot water for. The manner and regard in which he shared his opinions should as well. Recently, free agent center Jason Collins became the first active athlete in a major team sport to announce he's gay. There are numerous other athletes in different sports that are gay, but none that play in a league as popular as the NBA. Professional sports can seem to have a "bro-eyness" that has manifested in some homophobia, or at least the perception of...

Treasure Island

Picture
The Falcon’s Eye Theatre is back and they’re closing their sixth season with Ken Ludwig’s Treasure Island. It is directed by David Harris, head of the Department of Theatre and Cinema at Folsom Lake College. Treasure Island is a coming of age story about a young boy named Jim Hawkins and his journey to find Treasure Island. Along the way, he meets up with Long John Silver, who may not be the man that he appears to...

Art and Food at Dos Coyotes Border Café

Picture
While perusing the extensive menu of Dos Coyotes Border Café, one can find a tantalizing list of ingredients such as: charbroiled chicken breast, fresh mango salsa, chiles, herbs, habanero salsa, dawg sauce, melted cheese, guacamole, and…art? For the last four years, Dos Coyotes Border Café has provided an opportunity for their loyal customers to express some of their artistic talents while simultaneously supporting their favorite Tex Mex eatery. This year, however, the restaurant has decided to increase the incentives for their “Kinda Annual, Semi-Occasional Poster Contest”, making...

The State of Rap

Picture
Rap music, like any other art, goes through phases. It's had stages of light and dark, grimly serious to carefree, socially conscious to obsessed of material possessions. Not only did the lyrical stylings change, but so did the music. The greatest era of rap is the early to mid 90's. There's a grittiness and rawness I appreciate in the Wu Tang Clan. While the predominant gangster rap is not completely socially conscious, groups like...
